New at H&B: Tixel® for Skin Rejuvenation

At Humphrey & Beleznay Cosmetic Dermatology, the decision to introduce a new treatment is very intentionally approached. The solutions we choose for our patients must first and foremost be evidence-based, and they must also fulfill a patient need that isn’t optimally addressed by our existing offerings.

It is with sincere enthusiasm that we announce the newest treatment at H&B is Tixel®, an innovative solution that employs heat to rejuvenate and resurface the skin. In our practice, Tixel—which we often describe as a “skin iron”—occupies a space between skin tightening treatments (like Thermage® and Ultherapy®), and complexion treatments (like IPL, Clear + Brilliant®, microneedling, Excel V Laser). Though it requires a bit more recovery time, this new treatment allows us to improve the texture of the skin on the face, and effectively address traditionally hard-to-treat areas such as the periorbital region (crow’s feet, upper and lower eyelids), the perioral region (barcode lines and other lip lines), and the neck. It can be performed as a standalone treatment, but can also be added to any existing comprehensive treatment plan.

The team at H&B is excited about this treatment; read on to learn why.

What is Tixel®?

Tixel is a cutting-edge treatment that uses controlled thermal energy to create micro-injuries in the skin, inciting remarkable collagen production through recovery and effectively improving skin quality.

How does Tixel® work?

Tixel employs a specialized handpiece featuring small titanium cones, which briefly contact with the skin’s surface, delivering thermal energy. This energy is fractionally applied, creating micro-injuries that promote skin remodelling.

Tixel’s treatment parameters can be adjusted based on patient needs, goals, and treatment area, allowing for varying intensities, downtime, and results. This flexibility means that Tixel can offer both gentle and more assertive treatments to address different skin types and conditions.

What areas can Tixel® treat?

Tixel can stimulate collagen and rejuvenate the skin in the following areas:

  • Face: Reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and improves skin texture.
  • Periorbital region: Tixel is particularly effective for the delicate skin around the eyes. It’s safe to use directly over and under the eyelids without protective shields, it address sagging or crepiness in the upper eyelids and can smooth crow’s feet and crinkly lower eyelids.
  • Perioral region: This treatment is ideal for targeting radial lip lines, or barcode lines, especially in older patients with thin skin.
  • Neck: Tixel is excellent for enhancing firmness and addressing crepey, sagging skin on the neck.
  • Hands: Improves skin texture and reduces signs of aging.

What can I expect from Tixel® treatment and recovery?

A typical Tixel treatment session lasts about 30 minutes. A topical anesthetic is applied to ensure your comfort. Shortly after, the skin is thoroughly cleansed to prepare for treatment. You may feel brief sensations of heat throughout the treatment, but it is generally well-tolerated. Following, you can expect redness and mild swelling, similar to a sunburn. Tiny crusts may form on the skin where the energy was delivered, but these will heal, revealing smoother, rejuvenated skin underneath.

These recovery effects usually subside within a few days, but recovery time varies by treatment intensity and area. For lighter treatments, downtime is minimal, and most patients resume normal activities within a day or two. For more intensive treatments, there may be a few days to a week of downtime.

What results can I expect from my Tixel® treatment?

Tixel stimulates the body’s natural healing process, which leads to increased collagen and elastin production, and ultimately smoother, tighter, and more youthful-looking skin. The treatment can address fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars and other types of scarring, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin texture and tone, and sagging and elasticity.

How many Tixel® treatments will I need?

Tixel treatments are designed to be performed in a series, typically one to five sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Each session leads to gradual improvements, and once the initial series is complete, maintenance treatments may only be needed once a year.
