What Areas Can You Treat With Thermage and Ultherapy?

Humphrey Cosmetic Dermatology, Vancouver, British Columbia, Thermage vs Ultherapy

As we age, the supportive skin structures (like collagen and elastin) that keep our skin firm break down, contributing to skin laxity. For patients looking to age positively and confidently, skin tightening treatments like Thermage® and Ultherapy® are a great addition to a 360° treatment plan. These non-invasive, no-downtime treatments target that critical layer of deep facial tissue to stimulate new collagen and smooth, tighten, lift, and enhance the overall appearance of the skin. Essentially, working behind the scenes over time to alter the trajectory of aging.

Thermage vs Ultherapy

The skin tightening technologies of Thermage and Ultherapy offer impressive advantages when it comes to re-contouring skin across different areas of the body. They use different types of energy—radiofrequency and ultrasound, respectively— to break apart lax skin fibres and, over time, bring about new, tighter collagen bonds. Both Thermage and Ultherapy are very nuanced treatments. Thermage tightens and smooths skin while working on superficial skin layers. Ultherapy strengthens and lifts skin layers from deeper within. While one therapy may be better suited to a patient’s specific needs than another, these therapies may be used together in different anatomic areas. Our team will work with you to determine which treatment best suits your treatment plan.

Treatment Areas

A Thermage treatment penetrates shallower skin tissues, from the dermis, just below the surface of the skin, to the layer of subcutaneous fat tissues. We often choose Thermage to treat the upper and lower face, neck, décolleté, knees, and hands. It is also beneficial for treating cellulite and crepey skin across larger areas like the abdomen, thighs, arms, and buttocks.

Ultherapy is incredibly unique for its ability to treat the fascia, which is the same tissue targeted by a standard surgical facelift or brow lift. Ultherapy is often chosen to treat smaller, specific areas of concern, including the forehead, brows, eye area, cheeks, mouth, chin, jowls, and jawline. It can also be used across the neck and décolleté to revitalize and uplift the skin.

Thermage and Ultherapy both offer benefits for skin tightening, and often which treatment we recommend is patient-specific.

360 Degree Approach

Skin tightening using Thermage or Ultherapy provides instant-gratification with some early firmness and then increased definition seen in the intermediate term (typically the first one to three months). But the real magic with skin tightening happens when patients commit to this treatment at regular intervals over time, with an understanding that these treatments are working from a cumulative and preventative perspective. Using these treatments preventatively ensures future efforts can remain more conservative over time, even preventing or prolonging the consideration of more invasive options.
